Eating disorders can affect people of all genders and doesn’t just include things like anorexia and bulimia. It can include over-eating and it can be any difficulty with certain types of food, including a dependency on “healthy” things like protein shakes. Around 725,000 people in the UK have a form of eating disorder.
Body image often plays a big part but it can also be related to stress, self-esteem, abuse, peer pressures and can be a form of self-harm. Like self-harm, it’s not “attention seeking”, it’s a sign someone is unhappy and needs support.
Body image can be a major concern within the LGBTQ community. It’s a community that sometimes seems determined to turn minority groups into even more marginalised groups when you don’t fit a certain image (the kind that’s on the front of magazines…)
It’s a community you have every right to feel welcomed in, and feeling like you have to look a certain way for that to happen is a real problem.
