It’s open to anyone who’s 16-24 and looking to improve their prospects. As well as learning how to boost your career you’ll learn about how to make great radio and podcasts from an award winning broadcast journalist and presenter. No experience necessary! In just one 90 min session a week over 6 weeks, you’ll learn all about the world of radio in a safe, fun environment. Due to current restrictions initial teaching will be online before you’ll have the opportunity to visit the station in Manchester city centre.

In our blended session today, the Q42 Project came up with some great tips for those thinking of coming out of the closet!

- Don't conform, be yourself. There's no one way to be any identity.
- You don't have to if you don't want to, just be you.
- You are enough.
- Make sure you're in a safe place (emotionally and physically)
- Have resources ready (educational for them; security/ support for you!)
- Have trusted friends ready to support you.
- Pack a bag, have a prepared place to stay.
- Labels change and that's ok.
- Be kind to yourself.
- Go at your own pace.
- Prioritize your mental and physical health/ safety.
- Find (physical and/or digital) spaces where you can live your truth.
- Practice in advance but speak from the heart.
- There's no one right way to come out, do it in a way that works for you.
- Breathe!
- There's always hope!

Q42 Project Statement on the GRA Reforms: This is Not Good Enough for trans & non-binary young people

The UK Government’s response to the Gender Recognition Act consultation brings forth some welcome changes, including three new adult Gender Identity Clinics (with one in Greater Manchester!)

However, the changes do not do enough to support trans & non-binary young people. Under 18s are waiting over two years for a 1st appointment at a Gender Identity Clinic. This puts the overall emotional health and wellbeing of trans & non-binary young people at serious risk!

Of the 100,000 respondents to the consultation, 80.3% supported the removal of the requirement for a medical report in order to get legal gender recognition. However, this will not be changed in the reforms & individuals cannot self-identify their gender.

Legal recognition has also not been extended to trans young people or to non-binary people of any age. This is unacceptable.

While we are hopeful that NHS England’s independent review of Gender Identity Development Services will make improvements for trans children and young people, more must be done in the meantime to support trans & non-binary young people and their mental health.
